Designs in Clay

About me and my Art

Beginnings

I started working with clay in 1989; the year that I became a

Grandmother. I always thought ,"Someday I will make sculpture".

Once I got my hands in the clay I was hooked. I started right in

making figurative sculpture with no training at all. I can tell you,

those first sculptures were pretty bad! I got books from the library

and I kept trying and I learned. I used a mirror and myself as

a model. I worked at sculpture intensley, for several years .

I did some gallery shows. I sold some work. I collected some

rejection letters. I broke some work. I got discouraged.

Venus Collection

I decided that I wanted to do something that I couId

reproduce, and sell in shops. I taught myself how to make molds.

I started to do a line of slip-cast Goddess vessels,which I named

the "Venus Collection".

They sold pretty well ,and I had them in several

shops and Galleries in Oregon. I made many hundreds of them that

I never photographed. If you have one of them I would love to get a picture.

With these, I honed my skill at surface decoration .

Tile

When my husband and I remodelled our kitchen, I

wanted to make tile for it. I hadn't ever made any tile,

I didn't know a thing about it . But I thought I could do it.

So I made my first tile for our kitchen, and I loved it! I

decided that I wanted to make tile. I developed my own

tecnique. I sat down and drew out my designs. For me

making tile is a lot of fun. I was so happy with our kitchen

tile, that I decided to make more things for our house.

This is how I began making the lamps, mirrors and tables .

For the first 10 years I usually worked at my kitchen

table, or in the laundryroom; anywhere that I

could find a little corner with light. I enrolled in

pottery classes for the use of there kiln.

N o w

I love the studio that I have now.

I have my own sunny studio, in our

home that I share with my husband

Jonathan Day , who is also an artist.
